UV Editor gives me PTSD

Post by CarbonC12 »

I've been struggling around with this piece since 2 days.

Sometimes I can only select parts, then based on polygons.
What do I've to do, so I can DETERMINE what I WANT.

Do I need to press "Activate UV Mode" or something?

All I want is to edit the UV of objects, put them together - Line them up.
But I can't even select them.

I don't ask, if I would have a clue.
Much love, Carbon.

If your "Edit UV" tool has option "Compact charts to objects" toggled, it will generate ONE object from all the pieces and it will allow you to selected or edit (move/rotate/scale) pieces on polygons mode. Using one object for all the pieces gives a performance boost for UV editor.

You can toggle this option off and Edit UV tool will bring every piece of mesh into UV Mapper as a separate object.

So, generally, the behavior of ZModeler you describe is correct for "compact fragments" option. If you find it inconvenient, toggle it off.

Thank you so much!

It works now. Wish I would've known before.
But I don't really see what I've been selecting.

Any other ideas?

may you elaborate into this issue with more details and screenshots, because I don't understand what is meant there and what problem do you have with UV now.

Sure!

I wish to edit UV Map based on Faces, Edges and Vertexes.
I can only move the Faces, but I can't select Edges or Vertexes.

I wanna connect them or slice parts...

But I can't do it - Only move it

you can move/rotate/scale/mirror and edit layout on vertices level too.

however, you can't slice or weld vertices or make any changes that would affect topology. charts in UV mapper are "reference" to original mesh vertices and their UV coordinates, you can't make any changes in UV Mapper that would cause an object (fragment) in UV Mapper to mismatch in topology with it's reference real object (it's fragment).

Also, if you alter a topology of an original object (by knife, weld, insert or any other tool), an associated objects in UV Mapper will become invalid instantly and ZModeler will disable them. Clearing UV mapper is what you should do in such a case (close all UV Mapper windows opened and open UV Mapper again).

But I can't select it... Nothing happens?

Do I need to select the mesh before?

**EDIT**
Now I reopend the UV - Editor and my UV that I edited before disappeared

closing UV mapper will clear uv charts, its correct scenario.

you can bring uv charts back into UV Mapper with "Edit UV" tool.

you can switch to vertices mode: press vertices mode button (hotkey '1'), hover uv object and click on it. you can switch from one object's to another's vertices by switching temporary to objects: press '4' and '1', then hover an object of your choice and click on it.

Editing an object on polygons mode in UV mapper will always act as editing "fragment / island".

Edit: objects with purple outline are interactive charts (created by "Unwrap" UV editing mode). These can't be edited on vertices mode, but can be edited on "manipulators" mode ('5' hotkey). Deleting all manipulators on such a fragment will convert it to regular editing fragment in UV mapper (with green outline). Object with green outline should be editable on vertices level.

When you save .z3d file and restart ZModeler, opening your .z3d file will bring UV mapper window back and everything will be where it was.

use need to use "Edit UV" if you closed UV Mapper (no other UV Mapper window is shown currently). As soon as you open UV Mapper window again - it will be empty.
