Zmodler under Linux

Post by Harald-RS »

Hi, Oleg,
can you imagine to bring the Z-Modler also for Linux on the market?

I afraid it is barely possible. ZModeler has many windows-specific features that might not be available under linux. The way zmodeler draws its UI and they way UI elements work could be the problem. Also, ZModeler is wrapped into protection shield of StarForce "Crypto" that is available for windows applications only. Finally, I assume Linux version could be of interest to users that deal with linux games, and I don't know any linux games (beside ATS/ETS2 versions, that are also available as windows versions too).

There are already some games that run under Linux.

I switched because the Windows computer became slow and needs more and more memory.

And with the upcoming version of Windows 10 there will be no offline account anymore but only online.

And then Windows 10 will not run without an internet connection.

ZModeler is protected by StarForce software, it will not allow to run ZModeler on virtual machine as a part of protection measures.

But that is very bad for customers who switch from Windows and the forced cloud from Microsoft.

Because I have already seen it now that I have installed Windows 10 in the virtual box under Linux that you can only start the computer or Windows 10 with an online account.

There the offline account is no longer supported.

And I would like to determine which APPs I install on my computer and which not.

That's why I switched to Linux, and another reason was that there are only a handful of viruses under Linux, let alone Windows.

Harald, everybody understands your reasoning. But porting Zmodeler, a Windows based program that never had portability in mind, to Linux, would cost Oleg hundreds of hours. If not more. Which means a workload worth many thousands of Euro.

And the time spend on this is lost for ordinary Zmodeler development and game filter support, especially Grand Theft Auto V, which is now the game making Zmodeler money.

For what? I don't see the demand. It would mean burning money.

Hello Richard,

nice that you still exist, I haven't heard from you for a long time.

You may be right, but I have no alternative.

Blender is just too complicated for me to learn without a teacher.

It *might* be possible to run ZM3 under Wine/Proton but I'm pretty sure it will be very unstable and not worth it.
At least I can start it, but it crashes here and there. Also it's stuck requesting trial, so unusable overall.

Blender is good too! Maybe give it a try, unless you want ZM filters, for which ZM is the best.

There's a Blender plugin for GTA V, but as of now it's limited to ped model editing.

Hello Oleg,
It's starting to come to mind that you also offer the Z-Modeler for Linux.

According to current rumors and also on the Microsoft website, Windows 12 version was the last operating system software.

No, ZModeler was never made to be cross-platform. It resides heavily on a windows-specific code (WinAPI) and DirectX API.

That's okay Linux already gets Direct X.
But what is the reason that Windows is discontinued by Microsoft.

So you will have to adapt your program otherwise you will probably lose customers. Because I don't think anyone is willing to pay for Microsoft's new subscription model.

I do not expect OS Windows to become a discontinued product in upcoming 10+ years. In particular, I doubt Microsoft will have a must-to-pay scenario for their new OS. The paid subscription for extra features or extended OS version is a likely scenario.

Microsoft itself has advised normal users to install Linux on their website.

Genso comes with Windows 12, the online account Zwag so that you can no longer use the computer offline.

Then it will be very fun.

I haven't seen this anywhere, may you provide a link so I can get the entire situation more clear?

There is so many software made for windows-only, I doubt this is something that will actually happen - Microsoft abandons Windows OS project and makes all these software products useless.

This is generally a support for linux developers/teams to have Windows as their primary OS / working daily environment and supply a solution to be able run/develop/debug/review Linux software or Linux part of their complex software solutions. This is not any sign of signal from Microsoft to promote Linux over Windows. In fact, Microsoft makes an effort to have Linux software solutions being run or used under Windows as primary OS on your hardware. Virtual Machine with Linux and "Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)" is just about this - your primary OS is Windows, and use Linux as secondary OS for your work/business tasks from time to time.
